Like a lamb to the slaughter

We lost a son, Cameron to a car accident in 2001. Cameron was born on June 27. June 27, 1844 is the same day that Joseph and Hyrum were martyred in Carthage Illinois. Carthage jail is just 20 miles from Nauvoo. You can drive the country highways and be there in 25 minutes or so. On November 14th, we went with a group of temple missionaries that traced more the roads that Hyrum, Joseph and those that accompanied them would have taken. That journey set the stage as we imagined how they might have felt while riding horseback to the jail. There is a solemnness at the site as sister missionaries relive the events that led to Hyrum being shot through the door and Joseph jumping out of the 2nd story window in a hail of bullets. Over a year prior to the attack, Joseph Smith had told Richards that "the time would come that the balls would fly around him like hail, and he should see his friends fall on the right and on the left, but that there should not be a hole in his garment."
